Hand structuring for superior glide and race performance
RED CREEK RILLING TOOLS are designed for creating hand-made structures on all types of cross-country skis. The added structure improves both glide and overall ski feel on snow.
At the World Cup level, the machine-made stone grind is almost always complemented with a hand-applied structure for optimal performance in specific snow conditions.
The principle:
The warmer and more humid the snow, the coarser the structure should be.cIn cold, dry conditions, use a fine-grained base structure — if the machine grind is too rough, the glide will never be optimal in cold snow.
Preparation:
Begin with a well-prepared ski base featuring a fine stone grind. Apply the hand structure after waxing and brushing the ski.
Application:
Pull the rilling tool from tip to tail in the direction of the arrows. Maintain steady pressure over the structure roller — the more humid the snow, the deeper the structure, meaning you can apply slightly more pressure. After structuring, polish the base with a fine nylon brush, preferably using a roto brush.
⚠️ Do not apply structure in the grip zone.
The hand structure will disappear after the next waxing, allowing you to easily adapt to new snow conditions.
Maintenance:
Clean the structure roller from wax or residue using a RED CREEK Hand Brush (Ultra Fine Steel) or wax remover. The roller is made from stainless steel — handle it carefully to avoid damaging the fine pattern. Store in a dry place.
